I love these microscope slide mailers!

Want to alter something fun?  Try the 2 or 4-slide microscope slide mailers from Ten Two Studios!

I purchased some quite awhile ago, and have found they are perfect for gift cards and surfaces for collage!  With this one, I did a simple collage, inside and out, first using a great chili pepper napkin I received as a gift in a swap....enough to cover front, back and interior. I also used some stick-on letters that were also a swap giftie. I strengthened the fold of the mailer with some book binding tape, which I had stamped with the black boxes.  The images I used were from here , here, plus bingo card imagery.  New Valentine 'words' came out yesterday - a digital printout - I immediately purchased them and printed them out on my laser color printer.  (Yes, I'm a design team member, but I prefer to support my artist friends and acquaintances by purchasing their art - my choice - who wants big chain stores wiping out indy. artists???)

I now have three handmade valentines for gifts! (see below this post for the first two)

A Valentine card....

I love working with all of the product line of Ten Two Studios! The Valentine items are no exception! (This one is for my sweetheart :)).

A Friendship Card

I created this card for a dear friend. The base is Canson 100lb watercolor paper. I covered the exterior with a piece of my own digitally designed "background" paper. The edges are painted with watercolor, and overstamped with "you are special to me" all the way around.  The fold of the card has faux hinges, made from tickets.

The interior is a collage of napkin, portion of a paint-soaked baby wipe, ribbon ends, acrylic inks and paint, watercolors, black marker and pen, and a lovely lady with roses, image from Ten Two Studios.

 

The card measures, when opened, 9"H x 11.5"W.

More Red...The Art of the Fan

This is my second spread in the red-themed altered book, part of a round robin in which I'm participating.I used another of my favorite art papers for the background- the bold black/red parasols delight me! The images are from Ten Two Studios, here, and here.

I added a folded "Hellnote" for the fan in the center, and used a vintage Coats & Clark "Red Heart" cardboard fiber spindle for the bases for the 2 fans on the diagonal of the pages. I left the cards unadorned on the reverse sides of the spindle so the words 'Red' and 'art' would show.

A Tazo tea bag holder, joss papers, part of a Chinese/American newspaper, and a glitzy film piece are the added elements, as well as a few of my fabric beads dangling from red yarn. (out of view).  (CLICK IMAGE TO ENLARGE)

Creating in Color- continued....

This  altered composition book spread is meant to hold the instructions and address sheets for the participants of our design team round robin....I think the imagery speaks for itself.  I used a combination of fluid acrylics, my digitally designed background papers, cardstock, and one of my fave rubber stamps from Uptown Rubber Stamps, which I've had for nearly ten years...the company has been sold - the artist is Dawn Hauser and the stamp is called "Maxie".

The arms are opened out to hold the book away from her when the journal is closed---but as you open the pages wide, she pulls the book close to her chest.

My digital papers cover lined pages, folded over, and with the craft fasteners, I created pockets for the instructions.

 

CREATE IN LIVING COLOR

I'm participating in an altered book RR with my fellow Ten Two Studios Design Team ...for me, life in So. Oregon must have some  color, to offset many cloudy or rainy days....which in turn affect my mood.  My book is not about design, or even technique, but COLOR!!!  Color me hungry for color.  I've chosen a compo book upon which I'd only completed the cover.

I chose the lined pages because it will require the artists to pull out their color-caps to make the pages come to life. :))  Altering books can be adapting text or pages from a printed book to a journal page...which I have done with this, in terms of collage and idea.

This is a view of my Title page and Sign-in page, for which I used phone book pages on a collaged compo page, then free-form cut and applied to a lined compo page.

The background of the title page is a piece of my own digitally designed background paper; I added wings from a Ten Two Studios doll set, and made the paper doll from more of my background papers. I used rubber stamps from Character Constructions (D2005) and (E-006),  and an Acey Deucy stamp (Bead Keeper), for the whole body and head. The arms, title banner, and legs swing back and forth, bringing all the color to life!

Since the Sign-In page is cut in a curve, you can partially see the next spread.

I took text from a WWI-era book of poetry to add "For The Year's Beginning", with a bit of text to follow. (click to enlarge to read it).  The spread formed in my mind as I thought of fireworks exploding around the world as our decade turned over at midnight.  That led me to thinking of "In The Beginning"...which led my mind to wander to color, my garden, and all things which are new or renewed....hence the explosion of color, shape and words....don't look for 'pretty'- it's not there...but there are random words from book text with color names...green, red, blue, gold, crimson....I used sponge stamps for shapes, some spray inks, napkins, white gel pen, black Sharpie pen, and one of my fave rubber stamps from Meer Images, the multi-armed goddess of books!
